Freddy Horniman

Played by Daniel Ings

Freddy has assumed that he will inherit Halstead. Being passed over for his younger brother collides with a life of reckless spending, drugs and disastrous decisions.

Biography

Netflix describes Freddy as the expected heir whose partying and failed ventures help explain his father’s decision. His frustration is about status as well as money: Eddie receives the title Freddy considers his birthright.[1][2][3][4]

The Gentlemen

Season 1

Reveal Season 1 story spoilers

Freddy’s serious debt to the Dixon organization escalates when he shoots Tommy Dixon while wearing a chicken costume. Tommy’s brother Gospel John later seeks revenge. Netflix confirms that Freddy and the rest of the family survive the finale’s threat to Halstead.[2]

Season 2

Reveal Season 2 story spoilers

Freddy reappears in rehabilitation presenting himself as serious, spiritually reborn, and ready to acknowledge his failings. His sponsor is Gospel John, who turns Freddy’s resentment at losing the Halstead inheritance into a biblical grievance, comparing the brothers to Jacob and Esau. The religious reinvention conceals a dangerous alliance: Freddy knows about and helps Gospel John’s conspiracy, which kills Bella and brings an armed attack on his own family. When Eddie discovers the truth, he beats Freddy and threatens him with a gun, but does not shoot him. Instead, Eddie makes Freddy enter a van containing the captive Gospel John and a chainsaw. Freddy emerges covered in blood with Gospel John’s severed head, having survived his brother’s judgment at the cost of carrying out the killing himself.[14][15]

Personality

Reveal story spoilers

Freddy is entitled, impulsive and intensely sensitive to humiliation. He has enjoyed inherited privilege without acquiring the discipline that might justify his confidence. His disastrous ventures and violent response to Tommy demonstrate the danger of that wounded pride, while his later admission that Eddie is the real killer shows an unusual moment of self-recognition.[1][2]

Physical Appearance

Reveal story spoilers

Freddy’s everyday clothes mix corduroy, Fair Isle knitwear and weathered tweed. New pieces were distressed to look long worn, and shirts need not be neatly pressed or tucked in. His deliberately outrageous cockerel costume is a separate, humiliating set piece rather than his normal wardrobe.[13]

Notes

The television sources use Freddy. Frederick is a longer form in the editable cast listing; “Freddie” should be treated as a search/spelling variant rather than a second character. Keep freddy-horniman as the canonical slug.[1][2][3][4]
