Bobby Glass

Played by Ray Winstone

Bobby is behind bars but far from powerless. His daughter Susie manages the family’s cannabis business, while he continues to exert influence from prison.

Biography

Netflix’s cast guide describes Bobby as an active presence in the organization despite his imprisonment. Susie operates the business outside, but the family’s authority has not simply passed to a new generation.[1][2][3]

The Gentlemen

Season 1

Reveal Season 1 story spoilers

Bobby’s announcement that he is selling the business sets the finale’s bidding contest in motion. He later reveals that he was testing Eddie and Susie: they are to invest alongside him, not replace a retiring boss. The final prison scene places Stanley Johnston in Bobby’s company.[2]

Season 2

Reveal Season 2 story spoilers

Bobby continues directing the expanding Glass empire from prison, but his priorities diverge from Eddie’s. He orders the marijuana-decriminalization bill stopped to protect the existing illegal market. Eddie and Susie secretly work for the opposite outcome; Hawthorne’s death kills the legislation, and Bobby punishes Eddie with a near-fatal beating and burial. Bobby’s consultations with the Bannik, a purported bathhouse spirit, add an unexplained mystical element to his prison life. After Bella’s murder and the Halstead attack, Eddie wrongly concludes Bobby ordered the conspiracy and hires Marco to have him killed. Eddie and Susie intervene at the prison, where Bobby ultimately kills the assassin with a shiv. He ends the season envisaging an empire incorporating Marco’s operation, while both his daughter and Eddie are increasingly unwilling to accept his authority.[9][10]

Personality

Reveal story spoilers

Bobby treats criminal authority as business management, speaking of imprisonment almost as if it were a holiday. His apparent sale of the empire is a deliberate test of Eddie and Susie, revealing a patient, manipulative strategist who can make others feel in control while keeping the decisive advantage himself.[1][2]

Physical Appearance

Bobby retains a luxurious wardrobe even in prison: the costume account identifies cashmere knitwear, tweed and wool jackets, shearling coats, tailored trousers, shirts, ties and cravats. The contrast is between confinement and continued privilege; it does not establish the brand or price of every garment.[8]

Notes

Reveal story spoilers

Bobby remains an active authority while imprisoned. His final intentions should be described from the finale’s disclosure, not from the earlier claim that he wants to retire.[1][2][3]
