The Gentlemen

Season 1

Reveal Season 1 story spoilers

After Tommy disappears, John investigates at Halstead and questions Eddie and Freddy. The staged account initially directs his suspicion toward Jethro. By the finale, he returns demanding Freddy’s death in retribution for his brother. The Hornimans survive the threat; the official finale guide does not show every detail of its resolution.[1][2][3][4]

Season 2

Reveal Season 2 story spoilers

Gospel John meets Freddy in rehabilitation and becomes his spiritual sponsor. Rather than resolving Freddy’s anger, he gives it a religious rationale, casting the loss of the Halstead inheritance as a version of Jacob and Esau. The apparent brotherhood becomes the route for a conspiracy against Eddie: Gospel John is behind Bella’s death and the attempt to abduct Tarquin, with Freddy’s knowledge and assistance. Eddie eventually brings the two men together under his own control. He leaves Gospel John bound in a van with a chainsaw and orders Freddy inside. Freddy emerges carrying Gospel John’s severed head.[11]

Personality

Reveal story spoilers

John combines Christian fervour with intimidation and violence. His questioning of the Hornimans is not casual curiosity: he watches for guilt and invites confession. The contrast between preaching and criminal revenge is part of his characterization, not an endorsement of his religious claims.[1][2][3][4]

Physical Appearance

Gospel John has brushed-back hair and a long grey-white beard and moustache. In the cited character still, he wears a dark jacket over a pale open-neck shirt. This describes his visible presentation in that frame, not the performer’s off-screen appearance.[17][18]

Notes

The canonical profile can use Gospel John while retaining John Dixon as an alias. The name is television-specific; it must not be merged with an unrelated film character.[1][2][3][4]
