After meeting Susie at the auction, Joe renews their relationship and encourages her to enter the cocaine trade outside Bobby’s control. They travel to Peru to seek a supply arrangement with Carlos Vargas, then begin selling through a scheme presented by Hector as approved. When Arturo’s men arrive at Chucky’s restaurant, Susie discovers the claimed authorization was false. Joe proposes fleeing with their profits, but Blanket’s account of Hector’s visit exposes a further lie. Susie concludes Joe and Hector went around Carlos and that Joe killed Hector to hide it. She sends Joe alone to Madrid, where Vargas’s associates will take him to Peru. The retrieved account does not show Joe’s ultimate fate.[1][2][3][4]
Personality
Reveal story spoilers
Joe is charming enough to turn shared history into renewed intimacy and entrepreneurial persuasion. His behavior at dinner—displaying a pistol and returning to attack another guest—also makes his volatility visible. His decision to lie to Susie, then use their relationship to urge flight, supports a reading of him as self-protective and manipulative; it does not prove that every feeling he expresses is false.[1][2][3][4]
