The official cast guide presents Sabrina as an outwardly proper member of the aristocratic horse-and-country set. Her role in the household predates Eddie’s inheritance and the new Duke’s discovery of the cannabis operation.[1][2][3][4]
Lady Sabrina Horniman
Played by Joely Richardson
Sabrina is Eddie’s mother and the Dowager Duchess of Halstead. Her composed place in the country-house establishment conceals a private history that becomes important to Charly.
Biography
The Gentlemen
Season 1
Reveal Season 1 story spoilers
Netflix confirms that Sabrina had an affair with Halstead’s gamekeeper Geoff Seacombe and that Charly is their daughter. Charly discovers the truth during season one; the finale gives father and daughter a quiet acknowledgment of their relationship.[2]
Season 2
Reveal Season 2 story spoilers
Sabrina’s long relationship with Geoff becomes more openly significant as the family adjusts to Charly and Nanny’s baby, Tarquin. She is uneasy about Freddy returning from rehabilitation and later fears what Eddie’s near-fatal beating will make of him, asking Geoff to speak to her son. After the Italian wedding she returns to Halstead and discusses moving to the dower house with Geoff. The household is then attacked by armed mercenaries targeting Tarquin. Geoff gets Sabrina out of immediate danger, and she helps Charly hold on to the knowledge that he will do everything possible to bring the child back.[14][15][16][17][18]
Personality
Reveal story spoilers
Sabrina maintains the composed public bearing expected of the Dowager Duchess, while concealing a complicated private history. Richardson’s description of the household through the motto “Silence is golden” fits that discretion. Her affair with Geoff and their shared secret about Charly make the contrast between outward propriety and private life concrete.[1][2]
Physical Appearance
Reveal story spoilers
Sabrina’s clothes give the country-house matriarch a more relaxed, European-inflected elegance than a conventional lady-of-the-manor uniform. At the funeral, her hat carries a single magpie, explained by Bontemps as “one for sorrow.” Feather and animal details hint at Geoff’s presence in her life, but the designer explicitly notes that their origin as gifts is never confirmed.
Her country tweeds and riding boots give way in Italy to statement looks and feathered headpieces. Costume designer Bontemps identifies an Elizabeth Gage goat pendant among her jewelry.[13][19][20]
